Amid university’s turmoil, students, staff are leaving
Here are some effects of the current organizational turmoil at the University of Alaska. Fall semester enrollment at University of Alaska Anchorage is down by 13 percent, according to the university. Enrollment at University of Alaska Fairbanks is down 2.9 percent and University of Alaska Southeast is down 5 percent. Statewide enrollment is down 9.3 percent. In Anchorage, the sharp drop is mainly in continuing students, the university told us. Ironically, the incoming freshman class at UAA is one of the largest ever, a result of an intensive recruiting campaign by the university. UAA’s big loss is in continuing second, third and fourth-year students, which is attributed to uncertainty over budgets and programs. As for faculty and staff, the Senate State Affairs Committee was told Sept. 20 that 27 percent of the UAA’s staff are now seeking jobs outside the university. Normal turnover for a well-run university is 4.7 percent, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. See our recent Alaska Legislative Digest for a detailed analysis of university issues.
