Copper River salmon failure

The failure of the Copper River sockeye run is creating major problems for Cordova, where the community geared up for an expected first-of-the-season salmon fishery. The commercial fishery closed May 28 with a low catch of 28,000 sh. Five hundred and twenty permit holders showed up to sh. Meanwhile, the dismal returns have led to eye-popping prices for the sh that are available: Sockeye fillets selling for $49.95 a pound at Pike’s Street Market in Seattle and a whole sh at $156.96 per sh. That’s more than twice the value of a barrel of oil.
